Oulu All Star Big Bandin lokakuun konsertin solistiksi saapuu sukupolvensa johtava jazzääni, Chilestä kotoisin oleva ja nykyään Yhdysvalloissa vaikuttava tenorisaksofonisti ja säveltäjä Melissa Aldana. Konsertissa kuullaan Aldanan post-bopin perinteitä kunnioittavia sävellyksiä ison orkesterin voimin Jim McNeelyn sovituksina. Kapellimestarina toimii Ed Partyka.
Jazzmaailman kirkkaimpien tähtien joukkoon noussut Melissa Aldana on tehnyt yhteistyötä lukuisten jazzlegendojen, kuten John Scofieldin, Joe Lovanon, Roy Hargroven, Branford Marsaliksen ja SFJAZZ Collectiven kanssa. Vuonna 2013 hän teki historiaa voittaessaan kansainvälisen Thelonious Monk jazzkilpailun ensimmäisenä naisena ja eteläamerikkalaisena instrumentalistina. Grammy-ehdokkaana hän on ollut vuosina 2020 ja 2023. Aldanan johtaman jazzkvartetin albumit Visions (2019), 12 Stars (2022), sekä keväällä 2024 julkaistu Echoes of the Inner Prophet ovat saaneet ylistäviä arvioita.
Yhdysvaltalaissyntyinen Ed Partyka on toiminut UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestran taiteellisena johtajana ja pääkapellimestarina sekä tehnyt yhteistyötä monen eurooppalaisen big bandin kanssa. Partyka tunnetaan tarkasta musiikillisesta ilmaisustaan sekä mielikuvituksellisista ja korkealaatuisista sovituksistaan.

The guest soloist for Oulu All Star Big Band’s October concert will be one of the leading jazz voices of her generation, tenor saxophonist and composer Melissa Aldana, originally from Chile and now based in the United States. The concert features Aldana’s compositions, which honor the post-bop tradition, arranged for a large orchestra by Jim McNeely. The concert is conducted by Ed Partyka.
Melissa Aldana is one of the brightest stars in the jazz world at the moment. Aldana has collaborated with numerous jazz legends, including John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Roy Hargrove, Branford Marsalis, and the SFJAZZ Collective. In 2013, she made history by becoming the first woman and South American instrumentalist to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. She was nominated for a Grammy in both 2020 and 2023. Her albums with her jazz quartet, Visions (2019), 12 Stars (2022), and Echoes of the Inner Prophet, released in spring 2024, have received rave reviews.
Ed Partyka, an American-born conductor, has served as the artistic director and principal conductor of UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and has worked with several European big bands. He is renowned for his precise musical expression and his imaginative, high-quality arrangements.
